Lake, Fishing, Hiking & Green Space

A lake view from the residential side

Our facility sites on over 36 acres of wooded landscape and is nestled into the back corner of the Five Oaks community. Although we are located conveniently to most places in Durham and Chapel Hill, our grounds have the feel of a remote scenic park. Just have a sit by the 7 acre lake near the woods and you’ll see what we mean.

Members can enjoy acres of green space to relax in, between the lake, open space where kids play sports, and several acres of forest. In 2020, our Covid-19 project was building hiking trails through our forest. Check out the “Byassee Trail”, named after the path’s creator, by entering it either on the forested side of the lake or behind the tennis court. There are several different paths to take to enjoy forested solitude.

Pullup bars on the trail around the lake

Hike the trail around the lake and discover blackberries in June, Canadian geese chicks in July, and persimmons in October. Or, stop and challenge yourself to chin-ups on the pull-up bars.

On the forest side of the lake, members regularly enjoy catch and release fishing – bass, catfish, & crappie. Please note that fishing is only allowed on the non-residential side of the lake. As with all of our facilities, this private club is strictly for the use of members and their guests only.
